Client Brief

The client purchased a cleared site in a beautiful location in the Adelaide Hills and wanted to create a 4 bedroom family home with far reaching views. They wanted to connect the landscape with the living areas and erase the boundaries between inside and outside. Natural light and ventilation was also a consideration and the client wanted an energy efficient home to be both sustainable and easy to run. The desire to lower their current energy bills was also discussed.

Despite its seemingly ideal location, the actual site proved to be challenging as the far-reaching views that the client wanted to be able to see were blocked by the surrounding trees. Driven by the need to see distant view the final concept transformed the project into “upside down” house with the ground floor containing a guest bedroom/study with an en-suite, utility space and garaging. Open spaces between the ground floor and the first floor create previews to the first floor, the main family area, the kitchen and living area with the views that seamlessly flow into the horizon.

High level windows in the living area allow natural light to flood the family space. Using the principle of convection, the same windows help to ventilate the whole home, even the ground floor. Additional shading is installed to the large Northern windows to stop sunlight entering the home until mid-March without obscuring the distant views.

The home is completed to a high level with stone worktops, a vibrant gloss kitchen and local hardwood timber flooring throughout. Double glazed windows, TS4’s unique wall construction and attention to detail both on the drawing board and during construction help to seal the home to a level that exceeds the standard Australia build three-fold. The reduced air changes result in a significant reduction in heating and cooling requirements.
