Aldinga Straw Bale
Aldinga Arts Eco Village, Aldinga, SA. Year 2012
The Brief: To design a comfortable energy efficient home for a family who are artists and performers.
Design Response: The main living space has been designed as open plan with high ceilings and exposed timbers creating areas to hang props and sets from for theatrical rehearsals. There is also a detached studio and office with its own wet area.
The house and studio have been designed using passive solar principles to reduce the need for cooling during the summer months and heating in the winter. The Southern external walls (including the Eastern and Western walls) are constructed using a straw bale core and finished in an earth render. This creates a natural, breathable wall with excellent thermal characteristics of greater R6 compared to current requirements of a combined R Value of R2.8.
The North wall and North-West corner is constructed using a light clay slip mixed with straw creating a highly insulated solid wall with mass. Windows are timber with single glazing. There is also a thermally controlled sunroom to the North-East that captures the heat in the winter that is used to help heat the house. It achieved a 7 Star AccuRate Energy rating (7.3 Star overall) using only natural materials throughout its construction.
